Supermarket Pricing Labels Not Doing Well

pricing labelsWhen you’ve gone to the supermarket, I’m sure you’ve noticed the unit pricing labels in front of your items. Unit pricing is a labeling system that allows the consumer to compare prices and values of an item. Both online and large supermarkets are required to display the unit price next to the selling price. Last year, Australia mandated that all supermarkets, including online, small, and independent markets, had to use this system. Well, it is now one year later and the results don’t look so good. A survey was done to see how well everyone was doing. Small and independent markets were way below expectations.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, or ACCC, believe that failing to follow the system will diminish consumers’ confidence in buying products. The ACCC is not afraid to show retribution for these failing supermarkets. Well, Americans hope that Australia gets its act together and complies with the new policy. When going to the supermarket, take notice of that unit price to see if you’re really getting the most bang for your buck. People didn’t sit there for hours with price guns for nothing! Read that label before you throw that gallon of mayo in your shopping cart.
